The rhythmic click-clack of the knitting needles against each other filled Clara's ears. She sat on the porch swing, the gentle rocking motion a counterpoint to the vibrant energy of the neighborhood kids playing tag nearby. The letter, announcing the rejection from the national swim team, lay unopened on the small table beside her. It could sit there for a week.

Her fingers worked the yarn, creating a complex pattern that consumed her attention. A soft smile graced her lips. The sound of the street and the children was a welcome orchestra of everyday life.

"You got the news, right?" her neighbor, Mrs. Henderson, asked, peering over the fence.

Clara simply nodded, keeping her gaze focused on her work. "Indeed."
